About Me Birthplace of my paternal grandfather Mulranny, County Mayo, Ireland Hi! I'm Mary Jane Masterson. I have just celebrated my sixtieth anniversary in the Congregation of The Sisters of St. Joseph and I look forward to celebrating my seventieth. I am lucky to have had a twin sister to grow up with me. She married and had six children. Sadly for me, she died in 1994.
I was graduated from Western Reserve University (Now Case WRU) with a M.A. in Romance Languages, followed by some post graduate study at Notre Dame University and in Spain, Ecuador and Peru.
I began my teaching career at St. Rose School where I taught grades one, two, sixth and seventh (all boys in seventh.) After nine years there, I was assigned to Nazareth Academy, a girls’ Catholic high school. Besides chairing the Foreign Language Department, I taught Spanish, English and Theology, and moderated the school newspaper and yearbook. Sixteen years later I left the all girls' school to teach at St. Edward High School for boys where I chaired the Foreign Language Department and taught Spanish for eleven years.
After that, I was invited by Sister Mary Hough to teach small groups at St. Clement Elementary School in Lakewood. During one of those three years I volunteered to teach half - day kindergarten, which I thought, would be fun, and it was. Also, it offered a refreshing change of pace. After thirty-nine years I ended my teaching career where I started. Well, -not quite - I had begun with a double grade of first and second graders and ended with second graders only. I then accepted an invitation of St. Clement Pastor, Fr. Alfred Winters, to serve as the parish pastoral minister. Among my various involvements I enjoyed facilitating the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), Bereavement and Bible Groups and annulments. In 2005, after nineteen gratifying and life-giving years of service, I retired.
